Black Slug - Arion ater agg. (can be brown)

A bit dull today but no wind, the sun did pop out for a small time and it brought a
 Green hairstreek butterfly
 out so tiny easily missed.

When I was sat at the seat next to the pond two Herons flew over and there was a Buzzard flying round.
The rain over the past few days has helped the plants on but some like the Orchid are running mush later than last year.

There were many male Bumblebees huddled together on plants to keep warm and dry, I remember seeing them do this last year when June turned cold and wet.

Meadow Grasshopper (Chorthippus parallelus)

I found these stones in another part of the forest I have not been to before, one of the stones looks like it has a "Cup" ring, not the large one with water in but the photo , bottom middle.

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)

Sawfly

Fly
I had a walk in some of the parts I have not been to before, it is a very dense part of the forest so the habitat is none existence were the light can not get through the tree canopy. But there are pockets where the light does get through, especially along the fire brakes which are usually filled with water.

There are so many paths to explore but if you spun round and lost the direction you came in you would get lost as it all looks the same , so did not adventure to far on my own.
Here you find mosses and ferns as they survive in the dark damp conditions . The top fern like plant is

Common tamarisk moss (Thuidium tamariscinum)

Common on damp ground, trees and rotting wood. It forms yellowish-green or dark green thick mats or tufts. Stems are dark green/black. More commonly found in neutral soils.

The middle photo of the three could be  Common striated feather-moss but there are a few similar species.
Bottom left might be Common haircap (Polytrichum commune)

 .
In another area were all the trees have been felled and used, it is slowly returning back to nature. At the moment it is covered in Foxgloves

  1. Super post and photos Amanda. that forest is really a great place to visit. Hoverfly 2 is the "Footballer" hoverfly i.e. Helophilus pendulus. Not sure about the second though! Love the Fox and Cubs. No signs of the seeds I spread everywhere on the lawn last year having germinated :(
